Unpacking COVAX : Reporting on Global Access to Vaccines

Global media dialogue on unpacking the role of COVAX in ensuring that people in all corners of the world get access to safe and effective COVID-19 vaccines. Distinguished guest Dr Seth Berkley, CEO of Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, will walk us through why COVAX was created, the immense challenges COVAX partners faced in achieving the delivery of more than 1 billion COVID-19 vaccine doses and challenges on the horizon in 2022.
The harsh reality is that while several wealthy nations have exceeded 90% coverage only about 11% of all people living in low-income countries have received at least one dose, and about 3 billion people worldwide have yet to receive a single COVID-19 vaccine shot. What challenges do COVAX and partners around the world face in rapidly increasing access and uptake of COVID-19 vaccines amid unfolding humanitarian crises and now a threat to world peace?
We will discuss these issues with Dr Berkley and journalists will get a first-hand understanding of how COVAX works, its future role, aspects of vaccine procurement and distribution and logistics, the current vaccine portfolio and much more.

A pioneer in global public health for more than 35 years, Dr Seth Berkley has been a champion of equitable access to vaccines and of innovation, and a driving force to improve the way the world prevents and responds to infectious diseases. A medical doctor and infectious disease epidemiologist, Dr Berkley joined Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance as its CEO in August 2011. Under his leadership, Gavi has accelerated global immunisation access in its mission to save lives, reduce poverty and protect the world against the threat of epidemics and pandemics.
Dr Berkley sits on a number of international steering committees and corporate and not-for-profit boards. He has also been recognised by TIME magazine as one of “The TIME 100 – The World’s Most Influential People” and has consulted or worked in more than 50 countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America.
