Haiti

Aperçu du pays

In Haiti, Rooted in Trust is working to address the impacts of pandemic related information across the country with vulnerable communities.

Haiti is the most populous country in the Caribbean (about 12 million inhabitants), ahead of the Dominican Republic and Cuba. More than half of its population is under 34 years of age, 22.7% are between 15 and 24 years old. Unemployment and underemployment affect more than 60% of the population. People living with disabilities make up about 10% of the country’s total population, and more than half of the population are women (50.5 %).

Haiti is going through a multidimensional growing crisis: political, economic, and social. Insecurity has reached unprecedented levels and human rights abuses are widespread. Violence has reached an unprecedented level. Armed gangs are increasingly controlling territory, particularly in the capital Port-au-Prince, committing abuses against the police, the population and generating internal displacement.

Food insecurity has risen. Almost half of the population is food insecure and, for the first time in Haiti’s history, at least 19,000 people are facing catastrophic levels (IPC Phase 5).

Desperation is driving more people to leave the country; forced repatriations continue by land, air, or sea. The authorities confirmed new cases of cholera since October 2022, the first in three years. The disease spread across the country by mid-November. As a result, in 2023, more than 5.2 million Haitians need humanitarian assistance, up from 4.9 million in 2022.

We are working with:

PANOS CARIBBEAN: a well-known Haitian organization that supports marginalized populations through the media to enable communities to communicate and participate in ongoing development efforts. Panos Caribbean has over 30 years of expertise in Haiti and the Caribbean and has an established network of partnerships with local and regional associations, journalists, NGOs and other stakeholders working in the communications sector

POLICITÉ: a non-partisan, non-governmental think-and-do tank based in Haiti that aims to drive the design and implementation of effective, citizen-centered public development policies. Policité engages in research, debate, publication, and dissemination of innovative policy proposals to decision makers and the public, as well as other activities that can help combat poverty and contribute to the country’s economic and social development. Policité also works with non-state actors through a consulting practice, helping them to design and implement effective solutions as part of their development work in Haiti.

Enraciné dans la confiance

In Haiti, the Rooted in Trust team is working, in French and Creole, on rumors collection related to COVID-19, cholera, the vaccine and other topics related to community perceptions of the humanitarian response in the country. The Team is working to analyze the impacts of pandemic-related information in 4 departments of the country: South, Grand’Anse, West and North. It’s focused on women, and youth; the products provide information and communication responses that will enable community members to make informed decisions about their health, on individual and collective responses to Cholera and COVID-19.

RiT Haiti team produces, monthly, one Community Bulletin, one Humanitarian Bulletin, one Media Bulletin; and when needed SOS Bulletin. In coordination with implementing partners, the team conducted an Information Ecosystem Assessment and produce video with the community bulletin content in creole.
